Megan K. Laird, Esq., LL.M.

Megan K. Laird serves as Senior Counsel at FPLG, and has nearly 20 years of experience advising both organizations and individuals on complex legal matters. including compliance and consulting for tax-exempt entities.

Ms. Laird spent several years at KPMG, LLP advising tax-exempt organizations, providing guidance regarding restrictions on lobbying activities, analyzing sponsorship agreements, identifying and managing the impact of unrelated business income, and structuring complex planned giving arrangements. She also consulted on numerous program service expansions, fundraising strategies, joint ventures, and other transactional analysis and counseled nonprofit board members and employees on issues such as Form 990 compliance, conflicts of interest, unrelated business income, and risk management.

Before joining For Purpose Law Group, Ms. Laird served as the Director of the Property Tax Division at Maine Revenue Services where she oversaw the annual certification of state valuation audits for municipalities and supervised the administration of property taxes in Maine’s Unorganized Territory. She also reviewed proposed legislation, implemented legislative programs, and testified and provided analysis before the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation of the Maine State Legislature.

Prior to her work in state government, Ms. Laird founded an estate planning practice where she spent several years creating comprehensive, tailored estate plans and Medicaid asset protection strategies. Prior to estate planning, she performed corporate tax analysis and due diligence for both private equity clients and strategic buyers engaged in mergers and acquisitions, as well as provided tax structuring alternatives for various strategic acquisitions and dispositions and evaluated options for distressed company restructurings.
